What is Low Country Shrimp Boil?...

BBQ Friend:

     I was at the Amelia Island, FL BBQ contest recently and a BarbecueCoach.com member team, Pack-a-Smokes, did a shrimp boil Saturday night after the awards ceremony. Todd Tucker and his team did it up right - it was simply fantastic! That gave me the idea to do a Lowwhat is low country shrimp boil Country Shrimp Boil video. Not only is it a great recipe for any occasion, it's a great tailgating recipe . And... we're smack dab right in the height of the tailgating season.

     Speaking of Todd and the whole Pack-a-Smokes team... they are a prime example of how well the BarbecueCoach.com videos can help you to improve your BBQ. Todd didn't always win BBQ competitions but I knew if he watched the videos and practiced what he saw that he would soon start winning BBQ competitions left and right. And I was correct... Pack-a-Smokes can now easily win any contest they enter and they often do. They won the Grand in the Charleston, SC Sam's Club event and now I have to go up against them in the regional in Hendersonville, TN next weekend. I can think of many students that are just like him including the KCBS Team of the Year runner up in 201low country shrimp boil1 Swine Assassins and the 2011 FBA Team of the Year Git-R-Smoked. Those TOY accolades are hard to come by - the best of the best.

     By the way, we finished 3rd overall at the Amelia Island contest. It was one of those situations where we had three good calls and everybody was looking at us thinking we had won the Grand. They called Reserve Grand and it was Git-R-Smoked. Everybody still thought we had won. I knew better and said out loud... "I'll believe it when I hear it". Sure enough, the call came and it was B&T Cook Team that won the Grand and we finished 3rd. Our ribs were not quite up to snuff and it cost us the Grand. I think the wind was blowing too much right into my side smokestack and the ribs didn't get quite done enough. Oh well... we learn the hard way sometimes!

     Do yourself a favor, if you have never tried a Low Country Shrimp Boil, give it a try. It's fairly simple, can feed a bunch of people, and it's delicious! Here's the video which shows you how to do it right...

 

Here's the recipe...

Low Country Shrimp Boil

Bring water to boil, add crab boil, salt, garlic, lemon, and lime. Add potatoes, sausage, and corn. Boil for 1/2 an hour. If using frozen corn, add it 15 minutes after potatoes and sausage. Add shrimp and cook another 5-10 minutes. Don't overcook shrimp. Drain water and serve with cocktail sauce. (I make cocktail sauce using just catsup and horseradish.)
