2010 Lake Oconee BBQ & Blues Festival Review

                                                                                                                   October 2010

Dear BBQ Friend:

The Lake Oconee BBQ & Blues Festival was a great success in Greensboro, GA. I thought Amelia Island, FL was a great place to have a BBQ contest, but Lake Oconee ranks right up there with Amelia Island! The venue is a Georgia Power campground so everybody has their own camp site. It may be the first BBQ contest that I have been to where we were not packed into a parking lot like sardines. Some contests don't even provide on-site water or electricity. Most do not provide good electricity. At Lake Oconee, we had our site with our own hookups and a rest room with hot showers to boot! What a change!

The lake setting was absolutely beautiful. On Thursday night they cooked a big pot of jambalaya that really hit the spot after a long day of driving, setting up, and swimming. While sitting under the tent shooting the bull with fellow contestants, a stunning harvest moon rose from across the lake and amazed us all with it's size and luminescence. The weather was nice all weekend and the white sand beach swimming area was refreshing on Thursday afternoon.

The Chatham Artillery BBQ team took 2nd in ribs and 6th place overall. 2 Worthless Nuts took Grand and The Right Stuff took Reserve. There were several www.BarbecueCoach.com members that did quite well... Pickin Porkers was 3rd overall with 7th in chicken and 2nd in brisket. Sweats BBQ was 8th overall and had a nice 5th place walk in chicken. And Pit Bulls Up in Smoke had a nice walk with 10th in brisket.

Here's some shots I took of the weekend's activities...

The Rocky Mountain Products Southwest rub is what we are using this year. Chatham Artillery BBQ and another team has already won a Grand with it. It's the best "all around" rub I have ever tried. Especially good on brisket. I hear it's even good on scrambled eggs!...
