Dear BBQ Friend:
We arrived at Daytona International Speedway Thursday afternoon for the 1st annual Smoke on the Water Florida State BBQ Championship. The barbecue contest site was right
outside turn one and the roar of the NASC
AR Sprint Cup cars had already begun. I was
expecting blistering heat under the Florida sun, but it was not too bad as it was overcast and windy most of the weekend.
Ron Cates of Smoke on the Water was busy showing teams to their sites, Rub of Swamp Boys was setting up to do a demo for Kingsford all weekend, Myron Mixon was setting up to vend, Sams Club was there to promote their memberships, the reps Randy & Carol Bigler were greeting new arrivals, and everybody else was setting up for some hot competition. I was surprised at all the big name teams that were there competing... Jack's Old South, 2 Old Men and a Pig, Naked Bones BBQ, Pellet Envy, Mount Dora BBQ Company, QUAU, Munchee's Smokehouse, The Slabs.com, and about 20 other great barbecue teams were present and getting ready to light 'em up. In all, there were 36 teams.
After setting up on Thursday afternoon with two canopies and the RV awning, I had plenty of shade to keep cool. On Friday after lunch, I did all my meat preparation and then we watched a fantastic Nationwide series race on the TV Friday night in which Dale Jr finally won a race after a long dry spell. I cook hot & fast these days, so I started my briskets and butts at 5:00 am Saturday morning. Went back to sleep for a couple of hours and then it was busy from then until the last turn in. I sure would like to thank Dana & Janet Hillis for cooking that fantastic breakfast Saturday morning. It was ridiculous... scrambled eggs, grits, hash browns, perfectly fried bacon, sausage, and two different kinds of muffins! Enough to feed all the contestants. Dana, you need to do more KCBS contests or I need to do more FBA contests. I may start tracking the Hillis' to see what contests they're doing just to get their breakfast.
Overall Grand Champ was us, Chatham Artillery BBQ with 2nd in chicken and 2nd in brisket. Reserve went to 2 men and a Pig. Whiskey Bent took 1st in chicken, Jack's Smokin' Butts took 1st in ribs, EB's Pit Stop BBQ took 1st in pork, and Mount Dora BBQ Company took 1st in brisket. Congratulations to everyone who walked! After the awards ceremony, we all relaxed on the RV and watched the Sprint Cup race on TV with a nice fireworks show afterwards. Most of the teams went to the race, but we were too tired and it was a little rainy outside.
